Midsummer Cellars Lot 264 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon

Midsummer Cellars is a small winery in Saint Helena CA that focuses on just making excellent small production Cabernet Sauvignon.  This wine: lot #264, is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc that was all grown around the winery.  Only 354 cases were produced.  Midsummer Cellars is the winery of Rollie Heitz.  Rollie grew up at Heitz Cellars making wine with his father but as Heitz Wine Cellars grew Rollie decided to leave so that he could continue working on a very small scale.  This is absolutely fantastic powerful, grippy, old school Cabernet; drinking it is a tiny window back into the wild past of CA.

Vintage: 2013

Aroma: Lots of dense dark cherry and black currant.  It's a bit spicy with a hint of ceder. The lot 264 us very dark and has a bit of mocha.  It's dense, dark, and brooding smelling.

Pallet: The Midsummer is rich and dark.  Some mocha on the pallet too.  The tannins are serious but not aggressive and draw the wine out.  The long finish of the Midsummer lingers and there's a hint of Lavender. The wine comes across as dense and thick: I could cut it with a knife.  It's not a fruit bomb though.  The acidity and tannin are what really define the Midsummer.  There's serious linear structure of acidity and tannin.  The lot 264 tastes like it really means business.

The Midsummer Lot 264 is about $40 retail.
